Who Saved President Obama’s Life? His Mother.

The President on Using Babies For Punishment

When is a child a blessing and when is that infant punishment? Is the difference a baby brought into a happy, two parent home? If that is the standard of measurement, then our President was not a blessing. However, the decision his mother made to birth and raise Barack Obama became a blessing for her and all those who voted for him.

NBC just nixed a superbowl airing of an incredibly powerful public service announcement that reminds us of the value of the life of President Obama and all lives. It’s amazing to me that in an age of Lingerie bowl and Go Daddy ads that NBC feels an ad that reminds us of the power of giving life and the history that act can make is considered advocacy. Take a look:

It’s also a strange dichotomy that the mother of our very first African-American President chose life for him but he does not extend that blessing to all the children that follow him. President Obama has promised to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) once it is introduced as a bill in Congress. FOCA would eliminate all state and federal restrictions on abortion; that means third trimester abortions of infants by making a hole in their head and scrambling their brains. It also means continuing saline abortions; basically burning the infant boy or girl to death.

We will never know the talent, brilliance or intellect of the near 50 million individuals whose lives have been ended by abortion. Perhaps there was one who would have discovered a cure for cancer or AIDS, still another who would have guided us through our economic chaos; yet another who would have brought us energy independence. No, we will never know as their lives were cut short in the womb.

If we could move the issue of choice out of the womb and into the bedroom so many innocent lives would be saved and women could exercise greater control of their bodies and sexuality. The time to make a choice takes place before conception, not after. Abstinency or use of contraception is the most important choice in controlling one’s body and moving away from abortion.

Of course rape or incest create an entirely different set of circumstances. In these cases a different standard must be used by the pregnant woman regarding the end of her child’s life. However, it is important to realize that these cases are rare when compared with the total number of aborted children each year. In Mahkorn & Dolans’ “Sexual Assault & Pregnancy” report they note that out of approximately 6 million pregnancies per year, about 500 are assault rape pregnancies. If we measure those against 900,000 abortions and 500,000 miscarriages, we realize this type of pregnancy and abortion is extremely small; yet those  who argue for abortion uses it like a hammer.

Would the President and First Lady see a grandchild conceived out-of-welock as punishment?

Would he truly encourage either of his daughters to terminate the life of that grandchild?

As President Obama moves through his first term in office, we can only hope he truly wrestles with the issue of life and makes the same choice that his mother did so many years ago.  She chose life and – choosing life can change the course of history.

Would God Pollute or Protest the Condition of Creation?

I just finished reading a powerful report from a journalist who followed the length of the Ganges River is India. tributary stretches from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. It holds tremendous cultural and religious value to the Hindi people. Yet it has become a toxic disaster, flowing with deadly chemicals, disposed bodies and the polluted sewage of cities and towns. India’s Center for Science and the Environment confirms “Polluted river water is the biggest cause of skin problems, disabilities and high infant mortality rates.”

Reporter Joshua Hammer notes the most devout are risking their lives in honoring their beliefs: “They want to touch the water, rub their bodies in the water, sip the water,” he said, “and someday they will die because if it.”

Of course the Ganges is just one example of the troubles people are causing around the globe by not showing proper stewardship for the planet God has given us.  Our drive for resources and profit often outstrips the nobility and responsiblity of making sure each generation leaves the earth in healthy working order for our descendants. Over several generations, someone finally ends up with a shop-worn Terra firma that can no longer provide the world’s inhabitants their daily bread.

When we look at Isaiah Chapter 24, a potential picture of our environmental condition and future reveals itself in verses 4-5:

The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers,  the exalted of the earth languish.

The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant.

Are humans disobeying God’s innate laws for care taking of His creation?  Are we defiling our mountains, fields oceans and rivers? Is the earth and all the wonderful blessings it provides us in an irreversible decline?

If God walked among us again, would He take interest in how we care for His creation?  Or would He leave the role of environmental stewardship to “Greenpeace” and “The Sierra Club?”

Let’s Drown the Children We Don’t Like!

75 years ago the great Christian writer, philosopher and humorist G.K. Chesterton chose to address the hidden crime of abortion with incredibly insightful wit.

Some laughed; others who lacked a sense of humor were outraged at Chesterton’s suggestion that society “drown the children that were disliked.”

What the shallow-minded missed was Chesterton’s brilliant ridicule of abortion. If wise and decent people would never drown a child, why would they snuff out the life of a little infant boy or girl before we know how beautiful, wonderful and amazing that child might be?

In ancient cultures people actually sacrificed their infant children by the knife or burning them alive to the sun god or pretend, stone statues like Molech. In return they were told their crops would grow, their health would be good and their life would be spared suffering. But the promise was empty and the scar
that remained from taking the life of their own flesh and blood never left their broken heart or darkened mind.

The Apostle Paul says “Pray for Barack Obama”

The election has concluded. While there will many with sore feelings, everyone who walks under the banner of Christ must come together and intercede for Barak Obama. We are specifically instructed to do so in the word of God. During the Clinton Presidency, Christians spent more time criticizing and hating the man than lifting him before the Lord. While he made mistakes in his personal life and Presidency, we failed the man and faltered in our duty as believers.

Why does Barak Obama need your prayers?

#1 He will make decisions that influence countless people in signficant ways.

#2 He faces incredibly difficult challenges in our economy, as well as two difficult wars in the Middle East. Barak Obama is an ordinary man who will require extraordinary wisdom and strength to deal
with these serious issues.

#3 He will be surrounded by many people who have their own agenda or simply want to be “yes” men to him. We must pray for wise counsel and truth to be presented to Barak Obama as he leads the nation.

#4 No matter what I Timothy tells us to do as believers, plenty of saints and sinners will slander and attack Barak Obama because he was not their candidate of choice or he does not represent all the policies they hold for government. The Bible clearly states that “the heart of the King is like a river in the hands of the Lord, that He turns whichever way He wishes.” Prayer changes things – hate and slander only fuels evil.

#5 There will be many temptations that the new President will have to face. Power, wealth and compromise. Still others will wish him ill. We must pray that the Lord guards his heart, protects the President and his family and steers him on the path of truth and righteousness during his time in office.

The Bible is full of examples of leaders who knew the blessings and guidance of God almighty and others who made the mistake of accepting bad counsel, falling to temptation or simply going their own way. Still others appeared to be ready to take nations on a path to destruction but found God’s blessing, direction and favor.

The next President of the United States is Barak Obama. The leadership he provides and decisions he makes are waiting to be affected by the prayers of the saints.

What will you do to honor God’s direction in I Timothy and help write the story of the next four years in America?
